re, last point. It's interesting that Dr. Wolynn at the Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh was quoted -- they've actually figured out how to bill insurance for BFing consulting. Their lactation consultants are all pediatricians, and they bill as a pediatric office visit.
Generally, doctors not knowing about BFing is sort of in the same category as PPD. You get scrupulous care while you are pregnant, but the minute the baby is out its like, see ya in 6 weeks, don't let the door hit ya in your (very sore) ass on the way out. And all this dramatic stuff happening in the post partum body and you've got no one to ask. You get some interest from pediatricians who want to make sure that baby is being fed and you aren't going to kill it, but that's about it.
I had my OB office tell me to call my primary care physician when I was concerned with several of my IV sites after leaving the hospital after having G. I basically, said this is a complication of something that happened under your care - no fucking way. That did get me back in with my OB (who diagnosed me with phlebitis), but they were seriously going to shuttle me to by PCP, who probably had no idea I was even ever pregnant. Lots of doctors, but little consistency of care. The American healthcare system sucks at stuff on the edges of their carefully crafted medical categories and encyclopedic list of insurance codes.
