A gratuitous peony, which will be the name of my next great rock 'n' roll band.
(As captured in my front yard by a camera that has a problem reading vibrant reddish-purples.)

Beautiful! Much to my chagrin I kill peonies. A neighbor of mine has framed their front yard with a 15 foot swatch of gorgeous pale pink peonies, just to taunt me. I think a midnight trip with garden shears is in order.....
I suspect that this peony has only thrived (throve?) because I pay absolutely no attention to it most of the year. Seriously -- I can only seem to remember that there even is a peony until it blooms. It is a remarkably satisfying plant that way. Unlike the rhodie, which I shake my fist at.
