road trip

Because the Featureless Saint and I are the sort of folk who do such kooky things, we took a quick trip to Ithaca to visit Eisha, from 7-Imp, and her honey B, both of whom we knew in Knoxville.

Ithaca is one of my favorite cities. I wouldn't want to live there -- it just doesn't feel like a *real* place somehow -- but it is awesome to visit, if only for a few hours. I feel the same way about Asheville, NC. Great place; not real.

Anyway.

If anyone can explain the meaning behind this concrete block I'd be much obliged. It's on the sidewalk near the Chanticleer:

B also pondering the Octopus:

Strange. Is there a club or cafe by the same name, maybe?

Related to nothing...

Hey! Did you know that Scott Adams went to Hartwick. http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/the_dilbert_blog/2007/08/my-life-as-a-ho.html

When I Googled "West to the Octopus," it came up as a techno album by Spitznagel.

???

I got the Spitznagel album too -- which just can't be right. Although, knowing Ithaca, it could be in the realm of possibility but seems really unlikely.

Nope -- no bar or cafe. My first thought, too. And B & E haven't lived there long enough to know this sort of trivia.

Weird Ithaca thing -- there is a scale map of the solar system downtown. Jupiter is by the Moosewood. And to get to the best coffee place from B& E's apt., you turn left at Your Anus.

I did know Scott Adams went to Hartwick. It is a small but random sort of place.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm betting that the tile refers to the infamous junction of Rts 13, 79, 89, and 96, located just west of the tile, which was fondly called the Octopus by locals. The Octopus was torn out and replaced with a new road configuration some time in the last 20 years. (I have family in Ithaca and visit frequently. I love it too. Best way to describe the city is the bumper sticker "Ithaca: 4 square miles surrounded by reality")

oops, misplaced modifier... The intersection was called the Octopus, not the tile.

OH!!! I've heard of the octopus intersection, but didn't make the connection. That's so... Ithaca.

It was lovely to see you. Do come back soon!

Hey, wait - why's Scott giving me the evil eye???

Sarah -- that bumper sticker is perfect!

E - That's just how he looks. Don't take it personally. ;)
