good eats?
January 20, 2010
Classes started today, which means that I'll have to get the hang of Wednesdays again. There's just something about the middle of the week that is all messy when I have to do my actual job, you know, the one that provides my actual dental insurance and pays the bulk of my actual bills.
While I sort my Wednesdays out, a question:
Scott and I were watching Bourdain's show last night. He was in Istanbul (not Constantinople) and eating with his fixer's family, who cooked all sort of traditional dishes. All of said dishes looked yummy -- but that's not my question. I started to wonder what *I* would cook for Bourdain if he ever showed up at my house. What are the dishes that I feel tell some sort of story and that I feel I am competent at cooking?
I'm at a loss, frankly. Maybe I'd just buy a lot of limoncello and we could just drink ourselves so silly he'd fail to notice there was no food.
What would you cook?
Why did Constantinople get the works?

that's nobody's business but the Turks.

My lasagna. And then I'd need him to put it into the oven for me and then lift it out again. Because I put so much stuff in it (loads of sauce and cheese and meat) that my chiropractor would prefer I didn't try to lift the damn thing.

Chicken with lemons and olives I think.
Bourdain just filmed a show in Maine but he didn't come to my house.

The difficulty of course is that "American" food, such as it is, is pretty limited to regional dishes (except hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries). (Notice I didn't sully your blog with a serial comma.)
Do I cook him scrapple and cheesesteaks because I live here or tourtiere because my origins are French Canadian? (Or savory potato cake to represent the Polish?) Or just something company acceptable? I feel you...

Honestly? I'd take off all my clothes and hope for the best.

You kinda hit the nail for me, Anna. I mean - there are lots of company worthy dishes I could cook but none represents "my" cuisine. It's a puzzle. I mean, I'm not losing sleep but, still, a puzzle.
And, Cheryl, he was in the Hudson Valley not long ago and didn't visit me, either. Jerk. I would have taken my clothes off and everything. (I LOL'd about that suggestion...)
Hey, Jen, can you make lasagna for me? I'll lift it. :)

I'd make my grandmother's chocolate gravy and homemade biscuits for breakfast and then spend the rest of the day drinking ourselves silly!
