shameless self-promotion, 338 in a series + a thought
just pleasant

qotd, I thought I was the only one

"My mother taught me to read when I was four years old. Mom is a compulsive reader. She reads for pleasure, she reads to edify herself, but more often than not, she reads because she can't help it. I understand. The minute I find myself sitting still, I start rummaging around for printed material. Pretty much anything will do -- a book or magazine, sure. But also cereal boxes, the weekly shopper, the underside of the Kleenex box, or the back of the toothpaste tube. (I can recite by heart: "Crest has been shown to be an effective decay preventing dentifrice that can be of significant value when used in a conscientiously applied program of oral hygiene and regular professional care.")

-- Coop: A Family, A Farm, and the Pursuit of One Good Egg by Michael Perry. I have laughed out loud more time than I care to count with this one.

I read this one last summer, also Truck: A love story. I laughed out loud a lot. I also cried.

I was on a plane yesterday when Coop made me cry. What a fine, fine book it is. I can't wait to read more of his stuff.

That could be me as well. I may have to read this book.

I love Michael Perry's stuff and read his blog (www.sneezingcow.com). He is coming to my tiny town (888 souls) to speak on November 4, sponsored by a gift to our village library, and my friend the county librarian has arranged with him to speak to/do a book group with inmates at the county jail earlier that day. He is great.

That sounds like it will be a wonderful visit. Thanks for the reminder, too, to look at his blog.
