Why I would like to be Canadian, in the almost daily.

I agree about experiences, but there's no way that will work with kids at Christmas.

Actually ... we do the experiences thing for some Christmases (granted, the kids are a bit older). A few years ago we all went as a family to Colonial Williamsburg for the week of Christmas. We told the kids there'd be less under the tree because we were spending money on being there.
And last year we gave them movie passes and partial season tickets to a local minor league baseball team. And this year I they're getting ski slope gift cards.
But they still get plenty of stuff, too. (although Emily has almost entirely moved from toys to books, DVDs, etc.)
