many things make a post

* If you haven't yet seen The Overnighters, you really should. And then you should read this.

* Science!

* Again - this made me laugh more than it probably should have. Ditto this -- but in a different way.

* One of my favorite Story Corps stories.

* A sadly common story.

* Why one must keep teaching.

* Huh.

* Sounds about right.

* Nope. Not sorry.

* Right in the feels.

* People are interesting.

* I am the mother of dragons.

* The banana bit amused the hell out of me. Been there.

* I had the exact same response to Agent Carter. Max Gladstone articulated it so much better than I could.

* At least the first ingredient wasn't sorrow.

nuggets of job-based amusement

Part of my job brings me into contact with old alumni newsletters/magazines. On great and wonderful days, I come across photos like this one:

From the accompanying article: "Balancing is no claim to fame. Anyone can do it. All it takes is practice." [Doran] recommends starting with a pool cue, cushion side down. Center it on your nose and just look straight up. It is important to keep your eyes on the top of the object. Don't move your body, just move your head in the opposite direction of its sway. "You should find the center of the object. You become the balance point. Make it part of your own equilibrium."

According to the [tiny amount of] research I've done, he's currently a lawyer in Yonkers. Which just goes to show you.

up with figs, yearbook

Once upon a time, Lisa and Adrienne worked for the same alternative newsweekly. Now, both spend their respective days mining their creative souls and leading hermit-like lives. And so an idea was hatched. Every week, one would send the other a sketch - either in illustration or word form - and the other would make a companion sketch. The result would be posted on both their blogs every week, just for grins. Even if the result isn't award-worthy, the exercise might make both minds more nimble. Hopefully.

Yearbook

That’s the thing about life. Well, one of the things about it. I’m not saying this thing is everything about life, just that it comes up more than you might think. I’m over-explaining again, aren’t I?

So the thing I was talking about is that it’s never the person you think you should be worried about who ends up causing all of the trouble. Take the Dude in the picture next to mine in our college yearbook. We all thought he’d do something crazy that changes life as we know it. Or, if nothing else, gets chucked in jail. But no. He’s a pediatric dentist an North Carolina. Kids love him.

The one we should have been worried about looked totally average. That’s the one who crashed the Greek economy. Seriously. All it took was a bottle of Ouzo, a stick of gum, and Pilot Rollerball pen.

You just never know. Am I right?

many things make a post

* I would rather gouge my eyes out with a fork than read this book

* This seems about right.

* My safe word is Kim Wilde

* On Paleo.

* If you have not read Nation, you really should.

* What athletic women want (isn't this.)

* Again, the most dangerous thing I do as a parent is drive with my kids in the car.

* I'm not certain what's going on here but it sure is pretty.

* I need a mantra.

* CORGI RACE!

* That sound you hear is me laughing and crying.

* Always bring TP.

actual knitting content

This winter has seen the death of two pairs of gloves. Two. Feh, I say.

I picked up a fiddlehead mitten kit from Barbara Parry when I was at the Slater Mill Knitting Weekend. I'll never get them done in time to use this winter, I thought to myself, because soon we'll be past the worst of the weather.

Today I blocked the outer shells:

I'll still need to knit the liners. Surely the winter weather will be done by the time I get that part done. Please say yes.

This photo, taken yesterday, might help you with your prediction.
